Turn on your favorite show or music and sew the afternoon or evening away.
These winter sewing projects are not only easy to sew on those winter days, but they will keep you cozy once they are done. Many of them are great fleece sewing patterns and are nice and thick and comfortable.
The hardest part will be choosing which project to sew.
Essential Sewing Tools for Beginners
- Basic Sewing Machine: Your sewing machine is the heart of your sewing setup. Look for a reliable, easy-to-use machine with basic stitches rather than lots of complicated features.
- Fabric Scissors: A sharp pair of fabric scissors makes cutting easier and more accurate. Keep them just for fabric so they stay sharp.
- Embroidery scissors: These small scissors are perfect for trimming threads, clipping curves, and reaching small or tight areas.
- Tape Measure: You’ll use a tape measure for everything from measuring fabric to checking your body measurements. It’s a simple tool you’ll reach for again and again.
- Clear 18" Ruler and/or Large Quilters Ruler: A clear ruler lets you see your fabric while measuring and cutting, making it easier to get straight, accurate lines.
- Seam Ripper: Mistakes are part of sewing! A good seam ripper makes it much easier to remove stitches and try again.
- Seam Gauge: This small adjustable ruler makes measuring hems, seam allowances, and small folds quick and easy.
- Magnetic Pin Cushion: A magnetic pin cushion keeps your pins together and makes picking them up much easier, especially when you drop a few.
- Pins and/or Flat Pins and/or Wonder Clips: You’ll need something to hold fabric layers together while you sew. Pins work for most projects, while clips are especially helpful for thicker fabrics.
- Tailors Chalk and/or Fabric Pen: Use these to mark lines, placement points, hems, and other sewing guides directly on your fabric.
- French Curve Ruler: If you plan to sew clothing, a French curve helps you adjust pattern pieces and smoothly blend between different sizes.
- Rotary Cutter: A rotary cutter makes cutting fabric fast and accurate, especially when working with quilting cotton or multiple layers.
- Self-Healing Mat: A cutting mat protects your table and gives you a safe, smooth surface for using a rotary cutter.
- Thread: Good-quality thread helps your seams hold up over time. Choose a thread that matches your fabric and works well with your sewing machine.
