Every fall, we have season tickets to our university football games. Our weekends are spent cheering in the stands with blankets, cocoa and layers upon layers of clothing.

Even with all that, our fingers still become icicles. We've purchased hand warmers before but decided to try our hand at DIY hand warmers and they have been a game changer.
Those simple warmers made the chilly nights not only bearable but actually comfortable.
The best part? They're quick and easy to sew, making them the perfect project for beginner sewists. They also make a thoughtful gift for family and friends.
Once you make a few for yourself, you'll want to share with everyone. From neighbors heading to winter events to teachers, grandparents and kids who walk to school in the cold.

Easy DIY Hand Warmers Tutorial
Materials Needed
- Hand Warmer Sewing Pattern
- 1/4" yard flannel fabric - 100% cotton
- 100% cotton thread
- Dry Rice
- Optional: Ribbon
Step 1
Cut out 2 sets of mittens that are mirror images of each other. You should have 4 pieces when you are done.
With right sides together, matching two of the mitten pieces. Pin in place. Mark a 1" opening in the center of the bottom short side.
Stitch around the mitten. Repeat with opposite mitten.
Clip around the curved edges of the mitten to help it lay flat.
Turn right side out and press.
Step 6
Using a funnel, fill the hand warmer with rice. Don't overfill it. You'll want to fill it about 2/3 full.
Step 7
Stitch the opening of the heating pad closed by stitching across the entire short side.
Now that you've got your hand warmers ready to go, you can add some ribbon to gift to a friend or neighbor. They may not know what to do with their new DIY hand warmers. Make sure to print out the free instructions. They are part of the printable pattern below.
