A cup cozy is a cover that goes around your cup, keeping it warm and protecting your hands from heat and moisture.
What is the Purpose of a Cup Cozy?
The most obvious purpose of a cup cozy is to keep your hot drink at an enjoyable temperature while also keeping your fingers safe from scalding temperatures.
However, cup cozies have another purpose—they act as insulation, helping to keep drinks warm for longer periods of time. This makes them ideal for outdoor activities such as camping or hiking where hot drinks are desired but may not be immediately available.
What Size Should a Cup Cozy Be?
When it comes to size, there are two important considerations—the size of your mug and the thickness of your fabric.
When making your own cup cozy pattern, you want to measure both your mug and the fabric before cutting out the pattern pieces. Our pattern fits 12-16 ounce cups nicely.
How Do You Make a Cup Cozy
Free Coffee Cozy Pattern
- Cozy Sewing Pattern - grab at the end of the post, look for the peach colored button
- 2 Contrasting scraps of cotton fabric
- 1 piece of batting- I use Wrap n Zap
- 2" piece of Hook and Loop tape
- Matching Thread
I would highly suggest using 100% cotton materials for this project. Just to ensure that the material doesn't get hot enough to melt. Cottons are also not a conductor of heat, so it helps keep the heat away from your hands.
Cut out three cozy pattern pieces - get pattern at the end of the post. Make sure to mirror your cotton pieces.
Place the cozy pieces with right sides together.
Add the batting to the cozy pieces. Stitch around the outside of the cozy pieces at a 1/4" seam allowance.
Leave one of the short sides of the cozy open.
Trim the corners of the cozy to remove extra bulk. Turn cozy right side out.
Turn the raw edges of the open end of the cozy inside. Press.
The hook and loop tape will go on the short sides of the cozy. One side on the main fabric and the other on the lining fabric.
Stitch hook and loop tape to the cozy in a box shape. Make sure to close off the opening of the cozy with on of the sides of the tape as well.
Wrap that coffee cozy around your cup and you are ready to go!!!
A cup cozy is an essential accessory if you like carrying hot beverages on-the-go! Not only do they protect your hand from scalding temperatures but they also help keep drinks warm longer.
