DIY Reusable Sponge

There’s nothing quite like the disappointment of grabbing a sponge, only to be greeted by that unpleasant, musty smell. It’s a routine we all know too well—throwing yet another sponge in the trash and grabbing a new one, despite that nagging feeling of guilt.

I used to ignore it, but each plastic-wrapped sponge I bought left me wondering if there was a better, more sustainable choice. I wanted to move away from items that contribute to waste or are filled with unnecessary chemicals and find ways to add handmade, reusable items into my daily life.

So, I decided to start small and create these DIY reusable sponges. They are washable, long-lasting, and completely customizable to suit any scrubbing need!

DIY Reusable Kitchen Sponge Tutorial

Materials Needed

Terry cloth fabric or a seasonal kitchen towel
Lightweight mesh fabric
Matching Thread

Step 1

Cut two squares of terry cloth in 5" x 6" and one piece of mesh material in 5" x 6".

Step 2

Place the mesh material in between the two right sides of one of the main pieces. Pin in place and mark a 1.5" opening in the middle of one side of the square. You can mark with a fabric pen or with straight pins.

Step 3

Start at the opening and stitch the layers together. Pivoting around the corners by placing your needle down into the fabric corner, lifting your presser foot, turning the fabric, putting the presser foot back down and continuing to sew.

Step 4

Trim threads and clip the corners of your square. Turn the sponge right side out.

Step 7

Stitch the opening closed by topstitching around the entire sponge.
