Free Microwave Bowl Cozy Pattern

When winter comes around, our dinner menu changes a bit.  I tend to add a lot of soups to the menu.  Not just because they are tasty, but because a big pot a soup can make two or three meals in our home.

And when I can pull out a pre-made meal from the freezer, I'm a happy camper.  But heating up that meal can be a bit of a challenge.  We don't always have time to set a frozen soup on the stovetop and let it thaw.

Sometimes it is easier to use the microwave to heat the soup.  That is why I am loving the microwave bowl cozy pattern.

I can put frozen, canned or leftover soup in a bowl, set in the cozy and microwave.  My kids can pull them out of the microwave with now problem.

Or I can heat up my lunch and put it in the microwave bowl cozy and enjoy reading a book by the fire or chatting on the couch without burning my fingers or having to use a dirty pot holder.

What kind of batting do you use for a bowl cozy?

These diy bowl cozies are actually very simple to make.  Plus, they are great gifts for friends, family and even teachers.

Just like the Microwave Potato Sack, make sure that you use only 100% cotton materials, batting and thread.  Anything that goes in the microwave needs to be cotton.  Polyesters and other synthetic fibers will melt or burn in the microwave.

Even cottons can burn if they are heated for more than 3-4 minutes in the microwave.  So make sure to watch your microwave if you place the cozy in it.

I personally like to use Pellon Natural Wrap n Zap as my batting in a microwave cozy.  It is heat resistant and won't burn or scorch if used for short increments.

You don't have to heat the cozy if you'd rather not.  You can just heat your soup first and use the cozy more like a pot holder to keep the heat from scorching your table tops or hands.

How do I wash microwave bowl cozy?

I recommend washing your fabric before sewing.  Since 100% cottons shrink.  Otherwise your cozy will shrink and the dimensions will be off.

You can launder your Microwave Bowl Cozy, just like you would the  DIY tortilla warmer, by throwing it into the washing machine.  Just make sure to line dry it so it doesn't shrink.

What are the measurements of a bowl cozy?

Every pattern is different.  Our free pattern comes out to be 8.75" x 8.75" once sewn.  This pattern will fit standard size soup bowls.

Can you use flannel for bowl cozy?

Yes, as long as it is 100% cotton flannel.  Whatever style or weave of cotton fabric you pick, it HAS TO BE 100% cotton.  Otherwise it will burn, melt, scorch or catch fire in the microwave.

The same for the thread.  It has to be 100% cotton as well.

How to Make Microwave Bowl Cozy

    Materials Needed

    Step 1
Cut out 2 bowl cozies in the cotton fabric and 2 in batting.  Place one batting piece on a flat surface and one cotton fabric over the top with the right side up.

Stitch a crisscross pattern from one corner of the cozy to the other.  Repeat across the other side.

    Step 7
Pin the opening closed.  Topstitch around the entire cozy.  Press.

That's it!  Now place your favorite bowl inside the cozy and enjoy a yummy bowl of soup.

How long can you microwave a bowl cozy?

I recommend that you only microwave the cozy for 2-3 minute intervals.  Never heat it longer than 4 minutes at a time.  Any longer and it can still scorch the material.

Heat for 2-3 minutes.  Remove from microwave, stir.  And repeat.

    1. How do you know how big to make the darts on the bowl cozy so they are all the same size?

      1. That can still happen. That is why it is recommended to use in 3 minute increments.

      1. Not sure what you mean by they go flat. Any fabric once washed will change shape a bit. If you added the correct batting it should hold its shape.

    5. If you use the material recommended for potholders do you still need to double it. Can’t remember what it’s called.

      1. I use 100% cotton wrap n zap and do 2 layers. So year 2 layers for extra heat protection of the hands. Whatever you use, make sure it is microwave friendly or someone may zap it in the microwave and either melt the material or start a fire. Not good.
