"Hulk Smash!" my 4 year old yelled has he went whizzing by.
We had watched the entire Avengers movies in chronological order over the past 3 months. And he was convinced he was either Captain America or the Incredible Hulk.

Personally, I would prefer Captain America, but this little destroyer wanted all the muscles.
And since grandma had just gifted us a purple pair of knit pants that belonged to great grandma, we had the motivation to make a diy Hulk costume.
I knew I wanted something super simple, easy to wear and CHEAP! No way was I going to spend a ton of money on a costume that I knew a lot of Hulk smashing would happen in. It would be ruined in a week.
I went with the simple dress up tunic idea I used for our Buzz Lightyear costume. It is fast, kid friendly and felt. Which means a lot less sewing and more durable.
Let me say the end result was a hit. In fact, that 4 year old even decided the purple pants could be worn as his daily outfit. No Hulk mask needed.
And why not, if my daughter could wear her Princess Anna dress all day, why couldn't the Hulk just wear his purple pants all day?
DIY Hulk Costume
Materials Needed
- Dress Up Tunic Pattern
- Free Kids Knit Shorts Pattern or Jean and Jamey Jammies Pattern
- 1/2-1 yard Purple Knit Fabric (may need more depending on the size of pants you are making)
- 1/2 yard Green Felt
- 1" Elastic for pants - follow guidelines in the Kids Knit Shorts Pattern
- Matching Thread
- 50" Rickrack or Ribbon
For this project, I am making a size 5 in the Jean and Jamey pants. The tunic is for made for a toddler to preschool size child. If you are making a larger size, you will need to make a larger tunic.
Step 1
Follow your pattern directions to sew up a pair of kids shorts or pants. You may want to make them capri length so you can do step 2.
Take scissors and cut triangles out at the bottom of the pants. This will give them the jagged look that that Hulk's pants have.
Step 3
Cut out the tunic pattern. Make sure to cut the shoulders on the fold.
Use a pen to mark abdominal muscles on the front of the tunic. You want that Hulk to look strong!
Use a zig-zag stitch and sew along the lines you drew on the felt.
Measure down from the shoulder almost to the halfway point on the tunic and mark. Repeat on the opposite side. You can see the pins I used to mark the halfway points on the sides.
Cut your rickrack into 4 pieces.
Place two pieces of rickrack on the inside of the tunic across from each other at the point you marked. Stitch the rickrack to the single layer of felt. Repeat with opposite side.
Repeat this step with the other side of the tunic.

Cut out two mask pieces and two hair pieces in felt.
Take the 1/4" elastic and pin it between the two layers of the mask pieces on either side. You'll want to pin it about 1.5" down from the top of the mask.
Stitch the two layers of the mask together along the sides and the bottom. You can leave the top open.
Step 3
Sandwich the hair pieces over the top of the mask. Pin in place.
Stitch the two hair layers together overlapping the mask as you go.

Not only is your Avenger loving kids going to love it, but they will probably be like mine and choose to wear the pants all the time.
