I've kind of always had a thing for the idea of an old fashioned Christmas.
Natural evergreen, red holly, mistletoe, snow, and ice skating. (If you've ever seen the Winona Ryder version of Little Women. That's what I see.)
It just seemed like such a simple time. Such a magical time.

So naturally as I was trying to figure out a fun stocking to share with you, I channeled that magic.
Today I'm sharing this ice skate Christmas stocking template.
Because ice skating says Christmas and magic and love.
I mean who doesn't want to ice skate in the winter, while it's snowing, with Christian Bale.
(As long as your "little sister" doesn't fall in and ruin all the fun and romance.)
And of course, I had to start with a buffalo plaid. Because.....Buffalo Plaid!!!!
And doing them in contrasting combinations, I'm pretty sure everyone will have their own special stocking this year.
We've got some other easy Christmas gifts made with buffalo plaid as well. Just in case you feel like a bit more in your life.
Ice Skate Christmas Stocking Template
Materials Needed
- Ice Skate Christmas Stocking PDF pattern or SVG cut file - download at the end of the post
- 1/2 yard of buffalo plaid fabric
- 1/4 yard black cotton fabric
- 1/4 yard white cotton fabric
- 1 grey felt piece
- 1/2 yard fusible interfacing
- 3" of red ribbon
- Thread
- Optional: Cricut Maker
Tip: If you cut using the SVG cut file and cutting out on a Cricut Maker or other cutting, make sure to resize the stocking SVG file so it is at least 14" tall.
You are welcome to resize it how you see fit, but this pattern as a full size stocking should be at least 14" tall.
Step 1
Cut out one ice skate blade. I suggest using a stiff piece of felt as it keeps it's shape the best.
Place one of the skate heels right side up. Turn the blade upside down and match the fronts and backs. Place the other skate heel over the other two layers.
Stitch the 3 layers together making sure to only catch the tips of the blade in the stitching.
Start sewing at the top of the heel and finish at the top of the toe. Leave the top of the heel piece open.
Step 3
Turn the heel piece right side out. Press well.
Step 4
Place one of the stocking pieces right side up on a flat surface. Turn the blade/heel piece upside down and match along the bottom of the skate.
Place the other skate piece over the two pieces with RST (right sides together).
Pin and stitch 3 layers together starting at the top of the skate and finishing on the opposite side.
Step 5
With RST, place the two band pieces together. Stitch across the long side of the band.
Open and press.
Step 6
Open the band and match the short sides of the band. Stitch across.
You should now have a circular band. Fold the band in half along the sewn seam with the right side out. Press.
Turn the stocking inside out. Fold the ribbon in half. Pin to the seam on the heel side of the stocking.
Place the band around the top of the stocking. Pin in place. Stitch band to the stocking in a circle.
Step 9
Turn the stocking right side out and press well.
Optional: Topstitch around the top of the stocking.
Don't you think Winona would approve?
