Leather Hair Accessories with the Cricut Knife Blade

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Cricut.  The opinions and text are all mine.

Let’s talk about hair.  I’ve got a lot of it and so does my 6 year old daughter.  We like having a lot of hair, but with a lot of hair comes a lot of responsibility.  Like, making sure to wash and condition it well and brush it without pulling.

Also, planning enough time ahead so you can accessorize with fun bows, ribbons and hair ties.  That is why I am super excited to share with you these beautiful leather hair accessories I made with the Cricut Knife Blade.

I love to make hair accessories.  For instance, scrunchies are back, so I’ve got a great tutorial and pattern to make those.  I also made quite a few of my daughters hair bows when she was a baby.  Now that she is a bit older, she has a say in what she likes to wear.  She is into headbands and big bows.  We found some beautiful leathers and really wanted to try out some new hair accessories.

I was super excited to put together these fun leather hair accessories with the help of my Cricut Maker and the Knife Blade.  The Cricut Adaptive Tool Set is what makes it possible for leather to be cut out so smoothly and evenly.  If you aren't familiar with the adaptive tool set check out our post All About the Cricut Knife Blade.

We talk about what the adaptive tool set is and how it can be used.  We also share all the amazing materials that can be cut with the Knife Blade like leathers, chipboard, basswood and balsa wood.

For these leather hair accessories, I started by deciding what types of leather I wanted to use for each one.  I decided on genuine leather and a rose gold metallic leather.  Genuine leather is pliable.  Metallic leather is stiff but has a beautiful finish and shine. They worked so well being cut with the Cricut Knife Blade.

Next, I put together some fun designs in Cricut Design Space.  You can get these Leather Hair Accessory Designs in Design Space.  I went with a traditional bow, a fun layered flower for a headband and this simple hair accessory for a chopstick.  All three of these designs cut out like a dream on the Cricut Maker.

Materials Needed

Step 1
Load the designs in Cricut Design Space.  Resize them to fit your needs.  Smaller heads need smaller designs.

Step 2
Load leather onto the Cricut Purple Mat.  Make sure to use the purple mat so your leather will stick.  You can also add some painters tape or washi tape to the outside so that everything will stay in place.

Step 3
Send the design to your machine.  Select either Garment Leather or Tooling Leather under your materials.  That way it will cut using the Knife Blade.  If you choose Cricut Leather it will cut with the Deep Point Blade and that’s not what you want.

Step 4
Let the Cricut Maker cut out your designs.  It will take several passes for the Knife Blade to cut through the leather.  In my experience it generally takes 4-6 passes to cut through most leathers.

Step 5
Remove your leather designs.  Glue the flower pieces together using E6000 and add a button or snap top for the center.
