Well I stumbled across this board on Bargello Quilts and was fascinated. One link lead to another and before you know it husband was home and no dinner was ready. Although I'm by no means a quilter, I wanted to just give this a very basic try so when my Halloween Jelly Roll arrived, I knew what it was destined to become.
Making the Bargello Halloween Table Runner
You will need:- Moda Eerie Jelly Roll or 2.5 inch strips of Halloween fabrics
- Black for the binding
- Orange, purple or other Halloween color for the reverse
- Black thread
- Optional - quilt basting spray
- Optional - fabric markers - Frixion Pens

My strips
I sewed together 7 x 2.5 inch strips to make a final width of 14 inches. The strips from the jelly roll are the width of fabric - so 44 inches long.My strips
These are the pieces I used, transitioning from light through to dark and then light again. I've also seen some stunning examples with a more abrupt color change as well, so you could even try moving from light to dark and then immediately back to light again for a completely different look My strips I cut were:
- 2 inches
- 1.75
- 1.5
- 1.25
- 1.5
- 1.75
- 2
- 1.75
- 1.5
- 1.25
- 1
- 1.25
- 1.5
- 1.75
- 2
- and I repeated this pattern until all the width was cut.
How you assemble the strips is up to you, but you should decide which is going to be Piece One, and move that block one position up and down through the pattern as you go. Remember that Piece One can also run off the edge at one side and come back on at the other side too. Add a plain fabric in a Halloween color for the reverse and quilt with some simple spider webs, a plain binding and you are done!
I had lots of Halloween fabric left over and so I went on to make some matching table mats with a spooky silhouette on the back. You can find the details for these over at So Sew Easy HERE.

ReplyDeleteHow long does it end up being? 14" wide by how long? With all the seams it can't be 44"??

ReplyDeleteYes, I used the standard 1/4 inch seam allowance typical for quilting. Thanks for following along and saying such nice things - blush.

ReplyDeleteI'm sorry if this is not a good question, but I want to be clear! When you say "the strips I cut..." and you list 2", 1.75", etc: does this mean, once you sewed your seven jelly roll strips together, you cut top to bottom first 2", then a 1.75" piece, etc.? And then sewed those together to create your pattern?
