DIY Free Kids Apron Pattern & Tutorial


At my house, the little people love to help in the kitchen.  It can get messy and sticky and a little gross, but it is usually a fun and happy experience.  

The rule in our home, is if you help prepare the meal you wear an apron.  {That's probably the high school Foods Teacher in me.} 

 That's why we put together this free kids apron pattern.

Today I'm going to walk you through the steps for creating your own kids apron.

This kids apron pattern is free.  Which is always a plus.  Check out the end of the post on how you can download it.

The apron comes in sizes 18mo/2, 3/4, and 5/6.  However, you may need to adjust the straps to be smaller or bigger depending on the size of you little one.

The other great thing about this kids apron pattern is it is a great beginner project.  You could also spruce it up using freezer paper stencils to add a design or name to the apron.

Free Kids Apron Pattern
Materials Needed
  • Free Kids Apron pattern - download it at the end of the post
  • 1/2 yard cotton woven fabric
  • Thread
  • Sewing Machine

Apron Ties
Size
Cut 3
18 mo/2
2.25" x 22"
3/4
2.5" x 25"
5/6
3" x 28"

Step 1
Cut out the apron piece on the fold.  Cut out 3 ties using the following measurements.  {You may need to adjust them later before attaching them.}

Step 2
Fold the ties lengthwise with right sides together.  On 2 of them, stitch down the one short side and then down the long side. 

On the other, stitch down just the long side.

 Step 3

Using a safety pin or pen, turn your ties right side out.  Press.  Set aside.

Step 4
Press the curve sides of the apron 1/4" and then another 1/2".  Hiding the raw edge.

Step 5
Now repeat Step 4 with all the straight sides.  Stitch around the entire apron.

Step 6
Place the raw edge of one strap on the underarm corner of the apron and stitch it down.  

You may want to stitch 2 rows to reinforce the ties.  Repeat with opposite side.

Take the remaining neck strap and pin it to the top edge of the apron.  

Now is a good time to measure your strap to make sure it can fit over your child's head and that it isn't too 22px.  Once you have measured, stitch your neck strap down.


Wahoo!  You are done!  Congratulations.
