I'll admit, I'm not a trendsetter. In fact, much of the time I am behind the times. But I will say I am loving these cute side bow applique sweatshirts.
They are cute, simple to do and can really dress up a sweater or sweatshirt without breaking the bank.
For this project, you'll need a sweater (old or new), some fabric you love and thread. That's it.
You can actually decide if you want to applique using your sewing machine or hand embroidery. I am using my machine because I wanted to do the satin stitch all the way around, but you could do it by hand.
If you aren't sure you know how to hand embroider, check out our embroidery and applique page for free tutorials, guides and project ideas.

Easy Side Bow Applique Tutorial
Materials Needed:
Step 1
Place a piece of Heat N Bond over the pattern and trace. Make sure the glossy side of the Heat N Bond is facing down.
Hint: If you are using a design that isn't symmetrical, you'll want to trace your design mirrored.
Step 2
Press design to the wrong side of the applique fabric you are using.
Cut design out following the tracing lines. Remove paper backing.
Step 4
Press bow design to the side seam of the sweater. Match the bottom edge of the bow ribbons to the edge of the sweater.
Stitch down applique. You can use many different stitches. Here I did a satin stitch which is a very close together zig zag stitch. You could also do a straight stitch or even hand stitch a blanket stitch,
Cut the fabric that is between the two ends of the ribbon out. Making sure not to cut through any of your stitching.
Press well.
Now you've got a trendy and cute way to dress up your sweater. Add bows to holiday sweaters or make a simple addition to sports team sweatshirts.
