- Mug Rug Sewing Patterns - Download at the end of the post

- 3 scrap cotton fabric pieces of contrasting fabric for mittens, mitten bottoms and corners
- Matching embroider thread or floss
- Heat n Bond
- Cotton batting
- Thread
- Rotary cutter and Self Healing Mat
- Clear Ruler
Step 1
Step 3
Place the mug rug pattern (print at the end of the post) onto the quilted fabric. Pin in place and cut out the mug rug front and back.
Cut out 1 to 2 of the mug rug pattern in batting fabric.
Step 4
Place the front mug rug piece on a flat surface. Take the Heat n Bond pieces and place them on the mug rug where you'd like them. The mittens in the middle, corners in corners and the cuffs over the bottom of the mittens.
Step 5
Set sewing machine on a nice wide but compact zig-zag stitch. We call this a satin stitch. The stitches are close together but wide enough to fit across the base fabric and the edge of the applique design.
Stitch around the mitten and cuff. Stitch across the diagonal of the corners.
Press.
Step 6
Trace the ribbon pattern from one mitten to the other. Use a running stitch hand stitch between the two mittens.
Step 7
With RST, place the back and top together on a flat surface. Place the batting over the two pieces. Pin together, leaving a 2-3" opening on one of the short sides.
Stitch the 3 layers together at 1/4". Leaving the 2-3" opening.
Step 8
Clip the corners at a diagonal. Trim down the batting to remove extra bulk. Turn mug rug right side out.
