How to Make Chair Cushions

You know that feeling when the whole family comes over and everyone’s crammed around the table… sitting on chairs that feel more like bricks than seats? 

Yep, we’ve been there too. After a few minutes, folks start shifting, grabbing throw pillows, or offering to stand.

    That’s what sent me on the hunt for a better solution—something homemade, soft, and simple. And that’s exactly what this tutorial is all about. 

    Whether you’re hosting holiday meals, game night, or just want a cozier seat for your morning coffee, I’ll walk you through how to make chair cushions that actually make sitting down feel good again.

    No fancy skills needed—just a little time, some basic materials, and your sewing machine!

    Materials Needed

      For the foam pad, I used the 4-pack of Polyfil foam cushions from Walmart—they’re 16" x 16" and perfect for standard chairs. 

      You can also find similar ones online or at your local craft store or check on Amazon for similar products.

      Step 1

      Use the chart above to cut out the correct pieces in your cotton fabric.

      Step 2
      Take one tie piece and fold the long  side with right sides together.  Stitch down the long edge at 1/4".  Leaving the ends open.

      Repeat with other tie.

      Step 3
      Turn ties right side out using a safety pin or a bodkin.  Press.

      Step 4

      Hem one of the long sides of each back piece by folding 1/4" and pressing.  Folding again another 1/4" and press.  Stitch along the hem.  

      Repeating on the opposite piece.  Make sure you are folding to the wrong side of the fabric.

      Place the front right side up on a flat surface.  Place one back piece wrong side up over the front.  Matching the long edges.  

      Overlap the other back piece by matching it to the opposite front section.

      Step 6
      Place each of the cushion ties in between the front and back layers about 1" down from the top edge.  Pin around the outside of the entire square.

      Step 7

      Stitch around the outside at 1/2".  Making sure to backstitch.  Trim your corners.  Press.

      Step 8
      Turn the pillowcase right side out and press.  Place it over your pillow form.

      Place cushion cover it over your pillow form.

      Woot woot!  You can now tie it to the sides of your chairs and uncomfy seats.
