Every fall I get the urge to purge. Make the house clean, organized and fresh for the upcoming holidays. It also inspires me to decorate or redecorate and freshen up various areas of the house.
One of those areas is always the dining room. During the summer it becomes the catch all for everyone's Legos, crafts and projects. When school starts it holds papers, homework and all the snacks.
To freshen up the space, I like to change the linens to something a little more festive. These quilted placemat patterns are perfect. They add a little something to the space, but don't require a lot. Plus, since they are on the table, there isn't space for all the "other" stuff.

How to Sew a Quilted Placemat
Step 1
Use the
cutting chart above to cut out the pieces for your placemat.
When deciding on fabrics, pick one main fabric for the main panel (seen here with leaves). Choose the rest of your fabrics by pulling from this design or picking complementary colors.
Step 2
Take two of the small side panels and place them right sides together. Sew across the long side. Press open.
Step 3
Take the next small side panel and repeat the step. Repeat until all 5 panels are stitched together.
Step 4
With Right Sides Together (RST), match the small panel to the main panel pieces. Stitch down the seam.
Press open.
Step 5
With RST, place the bottom panel across the sewn main panel. Match the long edges. Stitch layers together.
Step 6
Press each seam flat and open.
Step 7
Place the placemat back right side up on a flat surface. Turn the quilted top face down over the placemat back. Right sides should be together. Place the cotton batting on top of the two layers. Pin layers together.
Step 8
Stitch the 3 layers together using a ¼” seam allowance. Leave a 3-4 inch opening on the bottom so you can turn the placemat right side out.
Clip corners. Press open.Step 9
Turn sewn placemat right side out. Press well.
Handstitch the opening closed using a blind hem stitch or slipstitch or topstitch around the entire placemat to finish.
I love these placemats, I will be making 5 of them for my daughter's family. Thanks for sharing.
