Every spring my kids come home and let me know their class is doing some type of "fairytale day" or "favorite book costume day". And since we love a good dress up day, we try to come up with something comfy and yet on theme.

Last year my youngest came home and said he wanted to go as a prince for fairytale day. This surprised me because he is more of a superhero dress up kind of guy. But of course I was on board but.....we don't have a prince costume.
I know. With all the costumes I've made for the kids over the years, we do not have a prince costume anywhere. Not even a crown for a prince. (I've got some tiaras, but he was not having that.)
That is how this DIY prince charming costume was born. I'll admit it was a bit of a create as you go project. Which is why this is a photo tutorial without any printable patterns. I was just winging it a bit.
But I know some of you are like that as well, and maybe parts of the tutorial will help you make your little guys prince dreams come true as well.

Little Prince Tunic Tutorial
Step 1
Using the blue felt, cut out a tunic pattern on the fold.
Step 2
Cut long strips of 1" yellow felt.
Pin and sew the yellow strips along the outside edge of the tunic and along the bottom edge.
No Sew Option: Press Heat n Bond Hem Tape to the back of the yellow felt. Then press the felt to the blue tunic. This will hold the felt in place without sewing.
Step 4
Cut out two 1.5" strips of black felt. Pin and stitch along the belly line on the front and back of the tunic pieces.
Cut out a rectangle "belt buckle" in yellow felt and stitch or iron in place.
Step 5
Cut out and press the sword and shield svg cut file to the front of the tunic. You can customize this by changing the color or adding a family name.
Cut out two 4" pieces of elastic. Pin them to the sides of the tunic and stitch using the machine or hand stitching.

Making a Prince Cape
Cut out a cape in the shape similar to a hexagon in both red and black.
Cut a 3" x neckline length of the cape in faux fur. Fold it in half and pin between the two right sides of the red and black satin on the neckline.
Step 3
Cut a two strips of black stain that are 3" x 15". Sew them along the long side. Turn right side out and press. These will be the ties for the cape.
Step 4
Pin the ties between the two layers of the cape close to the neckline. Make sure the ties are on the inside of the cape.
Step 5
Stitch around the entire cape at 1/2" seam allowance. Leave a 3" opening on one side.
Step 6
Turn the cape right side out and stitch the opening closed. Press.
Little Prince Crown
Step 1
For the crown, I printed off a crown coloring page template like this one. Measure around the head of your little prince. Place pattern on the fold and use the measurements to add or subtract from the pattern.
Step 2
Cut out two crowns in yellow felt. Leave an opening of 3" on the back of the crown for some elastic.
Step 3
Stitch two yellow crown pieces together.
Step 4
Stitch 2" piece of elastic to the opening at the back of the crown.
Now you've got a little prince costume. One that is easy to put on and take off. Which is great for a mama that is busy and can't constantly zip, unzip, tie and untie a costume.
