DIY Harry Potter Robe

"You're a wizard, Harry!"

That's a quote you hear often in our home.  Our children (and us too) really enjoy the Harry Potter books and movies.  From the time our oldest discovered the Wizarding World, we've loved to share the stories and magic.

When my oldest asked to be Harry for Halloween years ago, of course I agreed.  It took me a bit to figure out the easiest way to make him some wizard robes.  But we put together this fairly quick, DIY Harry Potter robe tutorial.

Fast forward several years, my other two kids want wizard robes.  They don't fit into brothers robes and they each need a set.  I finally decided to bite the bullet and put together this tutorial and video on making wizard robes.

I hope they'll come in handy for your little wizard (or your big wizard).

    Step 1
Layout fabric yardage flat and fold in half from raw edge to raw edge.  There should be a fold at the top were the neckline would be.

Have a model lay on the fabric or layout a long sleeve shirt and pants to get an estimate.

    Step 2
Use chalk to draw around the top and pants.  You want to have lots of room around the sleeves and taper the design to the edges.

Cut out the main fabric on your chalk line.  DO NOT CUT ALONG THE TOP FOLD.

    Step 3
Use the cut out as a template in Step 2 to cut out the lining piece of the robe.  Lay the lining flat and fold in half from raw edge to raw edge.  Lay the main robe over the top and match the top fold.  Cut out lining.

    Step 4
Find a sweater with a hood.  Use the hood as a template for the hood of the robe.  Add about 2" around the curved edge of the hood and along the neck edge.  Cut 2 hoods in black and 2 hoods in the lining material.

    Step 5
Place the right sides of the hoods together and stitch around the rounded edge.  Using a 3/8" seam allowance.  Do this for the main hood and lining hood.

    Step 6
Turn the lining hood right side out.  Place the lining hood inside the main hood matching the center seams.  Pin.  Line up the raw edges of the main and lining together and pin.  Stitch the two layers together along the front edge of the hood.  Leave the neckline open.

    Step 7
Turn hood right side out and press the seams.  Optional:  Topstitch around the front of the hood.

    Step 8
Take scissors and cut a line up the front of the main robe piece.  DO NOT CUT THROUGH BOTH LAYERS.  Cut from the feet to the center back where the fold is.

Repeat this same step with the lining.  There should now be a front opening for the main and lining robe pieces.

    Step 9
Place the main robe inside the lining with right sides together.  Match the sleeves and front openings.

    Step 10
Match the center seam of the lining hood to the center back opening of the right side of the lining.  Match the center seam of the main hood to the center back opening of the right side of the main robe.  Pin hood in place.

Continue pinning the hood between the two robe pieces until it is encased in the robe and only the raw edges are seen.

For this part, make sure to check out the YouTube video if you get confused.

    Step 11
This is what the hood pinned inside the robe should look like.  It makes a "V" shape.  Continue pinning the lining and main robe together along the opening.

Stitch the main fabric and lining together along the opening. Press.

    Step 13
Pull the lining piece of the sleeve out and press it towards the inside of the robe 1/4".  Press the main sleeve 1/4" to the inside of the robe.  Pin seams together.  Stitch around the hem of the sleeve.  Repeat with opposite sleeve.

    Step 14
Cut  a 5" piece of ribbon.  Fold it in half and stitch it 2-3" from the end of the hood on the front opening of the robe.  Cover ribbon with a large 1.5" button.

Stitch another button directly across on the opposite side of the robe.  This is the robe closure.

    diy harry potter robe
    Step 15
Pull the lining piece of the hem up press it towards the inside of the robe 1".  Press the main hem 1" to the inside of the robe.  Pin hem together.  Stitch the two layers together around the hem.

    1. Hi! I'm working on this and it's super tight under the armpits, I'm not sure where I went wrong! Any tips on how to fix it? Great tutorial, thanks!

      1. You could maybe add an additional fabric panel to the sides to widen the armpit area.
