Make a Homemade Witch Costume

My family loves Halloween.  So much in fact that for the past several years, my older children have decided on Halloween costumes for themselves a year in advance.

My daughter request to be a witch.  Not just any witch but a purple witch with purple flowers on her hat.

Why?  I don't know.  But I went to work to make a homemade witch costume exactly to her liking. Purple witch and all. I think we did a pretty good job.

Her costume was designed partially by her and the other part by me.  She not only requested a witch hat with purple flowers, but also purple striped "socks" and a purple skirt.

However, in my mind a witch has to wear a degree of black.  We headed to the fabric store and bought a costume satin for the skirt.

I also convinced her to get a black sheer fabric with witches on it to go over the top.  That way she was purple without being too purple.

My other goal with all of my children's Halloween costumes is to make them reusable and comfortable.

Typically I use a pajama pattern as the base of the costume like with our Ninja Turtle Costumes.  Or I make part of it reusable like in our Woody and Jessie costumes or our Steampunk Costumes.

So with this costume I wanted clothes that were comfy that she could either re-wear or use easily in her dress up box.

So I went with a simple t-shirt and leggings as the base.  They'd even make great pjs if she wanted.  I didn't even sew the t-shirt even though I could.  I happen to have this black tee in the closet and used it.  Fast, inexpensive and easy!

Overall, this costume probably cost less than $30 and she'll get a ton of use out of it over the next year or so.  (She's already worn it a couple of times.)

Let me walk you through what materials I used and the simple steps I used to make a homemade witch costume.  You won't believe how easy it really is.

Materials Needed

How to Add Iron-On Vinyl

Iron-on vinyl is perfect for quick costume projects.  I usually have several colors on hand.  Granted, I only had a sheet or two of purple, but I made it work for both the t-shirt and the leggings.

I started by cutting out strips of iron-on about 1/2" wide.  I placed them carefully on my legging pattern before I sewed them up.  I tried to measure between each strip so they were even.

Then I pressed them to the outside of the leggings.  Once they were pressed I sewed them up.

For the t-shirt, I drew the design on a sheet of paper and used that as my template to cut out each of my iron-on strips.

It worked out really well and I love the look of her t-shirt and it is much more comfortable than wearing a real corset.  And I can throw it in the wash when it gets dirty!

How to Make a Homemade Witch Costume Hat

I started by using this amazing Fiskar Circle Cutter.  It cuts out the perfect circle on the outside and on the inside.

Or you can also cut out the hat in Cricut Designs space with our Free Witch Hat pattern.  The cut file is for a preschool/toddler size witch hat.

Next, you'll want to cut out the triangle cone top.  Mine was about 11" by 22" in a triangle.  Stitch down the straight side and than stitch the brim of the hat to the top.

Next, make some flowers.  You can use the Witch Hat Pattern cut file or find some freebie flowers patterns on Pinterest.

You'll want probably 6 or 7 flowers in various sizes to glue to your hat.  You'll also want to cut some long strips of tulle in black, purple and grey.

Tie the tulle around the brim of the hat.  Glue flowers onto the front or side of the hat in a nice bunch.

How to Make a Quick Costume Skirt

I honestly LOVE this skirt.  It turned out really cute.  It was so fast to make and it was the perfect addition to make a homemade witch costume look flawless.

Start by folding your two fabric into a square (1).  Make the folded corners together.  Use pins or a marking pencil to mark a semi-circle for the waist (2).  To find the right waist measurement, measure the waist and divide by 4.  Cut out the semi circle (3).  Remove extra fabric (4).

Next, cut out a piece of purple knit fabric that is 5 inches smaller than the waist and about 5" wide (5).  Cut a piece of elastic and stitch together the ends (6).

Place the elastic inside the waistband (7).  Pin the waistband to the skirt and stitch it in place (8).  See how easy that was!!!  I didn't even hem the bottom of the skirt since she is a witch and meant to be a little unkempt.

For the broom, I used the remaining tulle as the bottom of the broom.  I bunched up the 3 colors together and tied them to a wooden dowel.  Tada!!

See how easy it is to make a homemade witch costume!!  Just a few supplies and a little bit of time and you can bust out this sweet costume in no time.

Plus, all of it can be thrown in the washing machine.  Which means it is a great dress up outfit and perfect for wearing to multiple Halloween parties or activities.
