Sewing with zippers is usually my students biggest fear. They seem so scary and daunting. Perhaps it is the fact that they have little "teeth" or because they can open and close. I'm not entirely sure why people are so scared of them, but today we will conquer your fear of sewing a zipper by showing you how to sew a zipper pouch.

What You’ll Need:
- Free PATTERN - for pencil pouch AND coin purse
- 1 Fat Quarter or 1/8 yard of fabric for Pencil Pouch; scrap fabric for coin purse
- 1/8 yard FusibleInterfacing
- 7” Zipper
- Zipper Foot for your machine
- Thread
Step 1
Place the lining fabric on a table with the right side facing up, place the zipper facing up and then the main fabric with wrong side up. Pin in place. Stitch the layers together along the zipper using your zipper foot. (Just attach your zipper foot and sew close to the zipper teeth.) Press both layers out away from the zipper.
Step 2
Repeat with opposite side of the zipper and pencil pouch pieces. Again pressing them away from the zipper.
Step 3
Open the zipper about 3 inches. Flip the pouch so that the right sides are all together. Pin in place.

Step 4
Make a small opening on the bottom of the lining about 3" wide. Stitch the lining and main fabric together, starting at one end of your 3" opening and ending at the other end. Clip the corners of your pouch
Through the opening in the lining, pull the pouch right side out.
Step 6
Pull the main pouch and the lining pouch apart. Stitch close the opening in the lining.
Step 7
Push the lining into the main pouch.
Optional: Topstitch the lining and main fabric together around the zipper.
