This week we are sewing up the Firecracker Dress and Tunic for our sew-a-long. Today we are talking about adding straps to the dress. You can grab the pattern for a discounted price using code "MYFIRECRACKER" in our Shop.
Now if you are unfamiliar with the Firecracker Dress, you'll want to check out the picture below. This pattern is fun because it has two sets of straps that run down the front of the dress. It then ties in the back in a bow or you can do some fun criss-crossing. This is where it gets its "firecracker" name.
However, on most dresses, the straps are hidden within the bodice and lining. Today I wanted to show you how easy it is to modify the Firecracker to add traditional straps.
Step 1
Measure down the length of your sewn bodice front. Take that measurement and subtract it from your strap measurement. This is so you don't have a super duper long strap at the end.
Step 2
Create your straps by folding in half lengthwise and stitching. Then turn your ties using a safety pin.
Step 3
Now you should have your 4 turned straps. Line them up along the top edge of your bodice where you want them placed. Make sure to leave a tail over the edge of the bodice. (mine is a little long, but that is okay) Stitch them in place.
Step 4
Place your back bodice over the top and stitch down your side seams. Do the same with the lining.
Step 5
Place the lining and bodice front with right sides together. Pin along the top and armholes. Then stitch the lining and bodice together. Make sure your end of your straps are out of the way. Clip your corners and trim your armholes.
Turn your bodice right side out and press. Then I would suggest topstitching around the neck and armholes.
Don't forget to join our Facebook Group to upload your Firecracker creations. You could win one of 3 great prize packs!!
Ooh! It's going to be hard deciding how to do the straps on the dress I'm sewing up for this sew along...
