Nevermore and Crow Pillow Patterns

Sally here, from Daisy Chain Creations, and it's confession time..I'm not big into decorating for Halloween...it's really not one of my favorite holidays. In fact I really could live without it.  My kids think this is kind of a bummer, so this year I tried to think of something I could add to my holiday decorations (besides the 3 little figurines I put out:), but didn't seem too much in my eyes.  That's when I came up with this tribute to a favorite spooky tale/poem of our family.

My husband likes to quote 'The Raven' by Edgar Allan Poe, so it has some meaning to our family. I just picked some things that remind one of the poem and freezer paper stenciled them on to some throw pillow slip covers.

As for the nitty-gritty, it was just simple freezer paper stenciling and I won't reinvent the wheel, because I know there are a ton of tutorials out there on how to do it.

Cut out your pictures on freezer paper
Iron the on to your pillow front
Paint in the stencil

Then I added some embellishments...in black of course.

Finally, I put the pillow slip cover together.  I have a tutorial if you want to learn how to make one and there's even a link to printable instructions.

So what spooky tale or poem would you choose?
Here are some that I came up with, some classic and some child friendly--really something for everyone (with links to goodreads).

And on a side note, here is an interesting article about kids reading spooky stories. While I don't read out loud to my 15 and 12 year old boys normally, around Halloween I'll read some short stories or one of the classics to them. They think it's pretty cool. Last year we did Frankenstein and this year because of their busy schedules, I think we are just going to do some of Poe's short stories. It's kind of fun to share that scary thrill together.

Thank you Chelsea for hosting this great series! There are so many fun and do-able ideas!
