Halloween Owl Mug Rugs from USS Crafty

Hello! I'm T'onna aka Navy Wifey Peters from USS Crafty where I blog about sewing, crocheting, wreath making, furniture makeovers, and nail art designs. Every now and then, I provide a glimpse into the life of a navy family. I'm thrilled to be a part of 31 Days of Halloween again, and this time I'm sharing a set of Halloween Owl Mug Rugs.

I've fallen in love with mug rugs recently, and decided that I wanted to make Halloween mug rugs with pockets for a spoon and tea bag... or candy!

In order to create these two owl shaped mug rugs, I drew an owl pattern and gathered my supplies.

I bought this Halloween bundle on sale a few months ago. I decided to use the orange cat fabric, the black BOO! fabrics, and the black witch's hat and boots fabric.

I cut out all the pieces. Originally, I was going to use black dots for the center of the eyes, but I decided that the cats staring back at you looks pretty cool for the center of the eyes.

I stitched along the top of each wing (with right sides together) because each wing will serve as a pocket. I had to remember not to sew down the top of the wings when I zigzag stitched them onto the front of the owls.

For these mug rugs, I used low loft quilt batting, and I attempted to do some quilting on the back of the mug rugs. I just used black fabric for the backs.

I stitched the front and back of the mug rugs together with right sides together and left about an inch open to flip them. (I also trimmed around the edges and went around the corners with my pinking shears.) After I turned them over to the right sides through the hole,  I stitched around the edges to finish them off.

Now, I'm ready to share some tea, coffee, hot cocoa, or witch's brew with a friend.
