Week 2:  Cost of Food Basics

This week we are sharing our Food Costing Spreadsheet with you.  This is a great way to see how much your are spending on a recipe.  Today we will show you how to use our spreadsheet.  Next week, we will show you how to cost out each of your recipes and find out the price per meal and per person.

First, download the Food Costing Spreadsheet from Google docs.  If you don't download the file to your computer it won't work correctly for you.  Once it is downloaded open it up.  It should look like the above picture, your fonts may be different but otherwise it should be similar.

Now let me explain how to read the Food Costing Spreadsheet.  Each item name is listed under "Product".

Unit Cost = cost you paid for the entire bottle, box, container
Unit Size = size of the entire bottle, box, container
Cost Per Serving = cost for one serving of the product, this is usually a smaller size like a cup, oz, etc
Serving Size = size of one serving of the product, serving size changes based on type of product

You'll notice that there are 3 columns in yellow.  The first is the serving size.  This is important.  If I check my recipe and it says I need 2 cups milk, I look at my serving sizes to make sure it is in cups.  If it isn't, I may have to make some conversions.

The next yellow column says "Enter Quantity Needed".  Here is where you enter how many servings you need.  So I entered 2 for my 2 cups of milk.

You will notice in the next yellow column there is now a price.  Each time you enter a quantity, the spreadsheet will tell you how much you are spending.  It is a great way to quickly see what a serving or a recipe will cost.

Lastly, once you have entered all your quantities into your spreadsheet, you'll see the total for the entire recipe in the purple box.  You have just costed out your first recipe.

My students always hated doing this because they said, "I can't just buy 2 cups of milk".  But you and I know the point of costing your recipes is to show yourself how much you can save by making your own meals at home.  It also gives you an idea of what meals will cost more then others.  It is a great way to organize your recipes and plan your meals.

Make sure to come back next week when we show you how to cost out your entire meal.  We'll have another free printable.

Don't forget to follow along and see all the awesome guest posts.

  1. This is great! I've been in need of something like this to have as a visual for the hubby. He has the assumption that eating out, depending on the place, is cheaper than cooking at home. Yay!
